The Luge vs. The Lunge – Learn to Avoid Accidents

For most of us the luge is a sport we see only once every four years while watching the winter Olympics. It is both a difficult and dangerous sport.  Lying on ones back on a luge sled while careening down the ice at 80 mph is not for the faint of heart.  Despite years of training, many world class athletes competing in the luge have suffered serious injuries and even death in their quest for the gold medal.

 

A more common peril that drivers face on the road on a regular basis is the lunge.  Like the luge this practice is very dangerous and can result in serious injury and death.  Lungers are those who fail to stop in sufficient space while entering the entrance to a road or an intersection.  These are the people coming out of a grocery store parking lot who stop with the front end of their car halfway into the lane of oncoming traffic.  Lungers are responsible for causing countless numbers of auto accidents.

 

The best defense against lungers is to be a defensive driver.  One should always not only pay attention to the car in front of them but also to cars to their side at intersections and parking lots.   Thus, it is important to maintain a safe rate of speed and be vigilant while driving.  Unlike the luge, the lunge is something one will encounter far more frequently than every four years.  Buckle up and be alert!
